Muons are one of the most exotic fundamental particles known to physics. Grandchildren of supernovae, they should never reach the Earth but they do – proving, as they do so, Einstein’s Theory of Relativity and its consequence that the faster you go, the longer you live. Not only that, but they give rise to an exotic chemistry, and two new elements that are not yet accepted into the Periodic Table. And to cap it all, they routinely indulge in cold nuclear fusion.
In this science cafe Chris Bore will follow the muon’s, and a personal, journey through particle physics, relativity, quantum mechanics and weird chemistry.
